From the President…

Ron’s Rant

We had a nice (not great) turnout for January’s club meeting.   Hopefully we can do better in February.  Not only did we have a nice turnout but we also had fun.  Your loving President took a beating when he proposed that club dues be for a calendar year with no pro-ration.  It was finally decided that club dues are for 12 months, regardless of when someone joins (example:  join in February 2006; membership will expire in February 2007).

Our biggest CHALLENGE in the next few years is to attract and retain younger club members.  Everyone at the meeting agreed that there is a problem.  But no one, including me had a solution.  If you have any ideas PLEASE let us know.

This year a number of club members:  Rick Routten, Diane Berard, Cheryl Lauria and Annette Tollett have stepped forward to sponsor a walk.  It is time to start planning next year’s (2007) walks.  If there is a walk you’d like to sponsor (be the lead) let us know. Otherwise the only events the club will sponsor will be the Williamsburg weekend walks and swim. The club has checklists with things to do for a walk plus plenty of people with prior experience putting a walk together so you aren’t alone in planning.  Remember this is YOUR club and the more help we have the better the club functions are.

See you at the February meeting.

Ron

New Policies

Newsletter by mail

Starting with the March newsletter only club members who do not have an email or who specifically request a mailed copy will receive the newsletter by mail.  If you have an email account and want to receive the newsletter by mail please notify Art Whittaker by March 1.  IF YOU DO NOT HAVE AN EMAIL ACCOUNT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO ANYTHING.

Speaking at board meetings

Ron requested that any club member attending board meetings should consult with him before speaking at the board meeting.

Speaking at general meetings:

Ron requested that anyone speaking or presenting new business at the general meetings write a summary of the presentation and give it to Barbara Washburn. This helps her capture the information in the minutes.

Committees

Our club has a number of committees, such as sales, publicity, newsletter, webmaster, membership, etc., to help conduct club business. Unfortunately they are all committees of one.  So over the next few months we will try and tell you what each committee does and hopefully you will find one that you want to work on.

We STILL NEED people to work our April EVENT.  I guess if we don’t get enough people by March 1st I will have to cancel the event!!  Remember it is your club. So I guess I will start with the Volunteer Committee.

VOLUNTEER COMMITTEE:

CHAIRPERSON:  Betty Bess

PHONE:  539-0136

E-MAIL:  bess13@verizon.net

Betty has one of the ______ jobs in the club, but as a former colonoscopy nurse she’s used to it!  Three or four months prior to an event Betty finds out from the event sponsor how many check points the event will have and how many other workers will be needed.  She then publishes (via email or at the club meeting) the schedule and starts signing workers up.

If the schedule is not full about six weeks prior (the norm), then comes the colonoscopy part…she emails and or calls everyone not signed up to work.  Two weeks prior she reminds everyone of where and when they are working.

Thank you Betty for all you do for the club!

Interested in helping with the volunteer committee?  Give Betty a call!

Ron

Walking back through 2005:

We’ve heard from more club members about their goals, walks, special times in 2005…

Jack Rezabek accomplished his goal of completing 25 walks. Jack finished the book for 400-425 events.

Congratulations, Jack!

The Bowers (Andy, Pam, Drew, and Mandy) completed the Masters Program (walking 12 or more walks as a family) for the seventh year. They also added the capitals of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Georgia to their goal of walking in all 50 states and 51 capitals.

Way to go—Andy, Pam, Drew and Mandy!!

Come on, folks, get those books out and start walking!

Group Walk-Hilton Village

What a great day Saturday January 28 was for a walk.  Twenty people turned out for the group walk at Hilton Village.  The trail was recently modified for those that have not walked the trail recently--a nice change to a great trail through the Hilton Village area.

Want to meet new people?

I have found fellow walkers to be a friendly group of people. In addition, when walking with my dog, Phangsworth, fellow animal lovers will also start up conversations. So any time I walk, I know I will meet at least 3 to 4 new people. However, when laying out the new Hilton Village walk with "the measuring Wheel" two weekends ago, I had very young children, teenagers, runners, and various people on the streets who stopped to ask me questions about the Wheel.

The Wheel is a florescent orange and looks like a unicycle that you push instead of ride. I met more new people as I walked with the Wheel than on any other volksmarch!

Laying out the trail was easy. Andy Armano, our Trailmaster, instructed me to zero out the counter and then walk. All I had to do was look at the wheel to check the distances at turns and landmarks. So if you want to meet new people, volunteer to help lay out new trails with Andy.

Upcoming new trails will be done for the April walk at Grandview Nature Preserve and in June for the Newport News Park Walk.

If you are looking for a River Walk or Rail Road Heritage Walk, try the revised Hilton Village Walk.

Bus Corner

Plans for our spring trip are canceled, and we need your input for a fall trip.

We had selected March 24-26 as our best date for a trip to Charleston; however, it isn't the best time to go to Charleston--March is spring break for many schools and the start of the peak season for Charleston hotels.

Two choices for a trip this fall:

·         Charleston Nov. 11-13, Veteran's Day weekend;  approximately $320 per person.

·         Hershey, PA, Nov. 24-26 (Thanksgiving weekend); approximately $280.

We need your input. Are you interested in one of these trips? If you are willing to support either trip, do you have a preference? Email Diane Berard or Pat LaRoux and tell us which trip you are likely to support. Also let us know of your interests.

We will gather information and summarize for February's meeting.

Grandview Nature Preserve Volksmarch

Our club’s next regular walk is scheduled for April 8, 2006 at the Grandview Nature Preserve.  If you have not signed up to work the event please contact Betty Bess.

Attend the March meeting to learn more about Grandview Nature Preserve.

Honoring Deceased Members

Last September we lost a dear club member, Jo Lascara.  At the October club meeting we discussed ideas of how to honor club members that die.  We decided to table the discussion until January.  At the January club meeting the following ideas were discussed:

Make a donation to a charity in honor of the deceased

(If we go with this option, how much?)

Send flowers for the funeral

(If we go with this option, how much do we spend on the flowers?)

A Remembrance Ceremony or “Roll Call”

(Once a year/maybe the club picnic/acknowledge those that died the previous year by either lighting a candle/posting a picture)

What do you think?  We plan to discuss ideas at the February meeting. If you cannot attend the meeting please send your ideas to Ron Berard.
