Starting Point 2007

Every year AVA publishes a book that lists all the year round events called Starting Point. The Pathfinders place their order in late October or early Nov. If you'd like a copy ordered for you please let Diane know by 30 September. The exact cost is unknown at this time but it should be about $16.00.  Once you place your order YOU are expected to pay.

RON’S RANT

Summer is coming to a close. It has been a good one. Our fun dinners all had better than expected attendance. Maybe we should just cancel our regular meetings and go out to dinner – just talking. J

Our next meeting is the 4th Wednesday, Sep. 27. Please note the change.

Our next walk is Oct. 21 at Yorktown in conjunction with the 225th anniversary of Cornwallis’ surrender. I expect all club members to help out. Contact Betty Bess, phone: 757-539-0136, email: bess13@verizon.net or see her at the September club meeting and let her know what time and where you would prefer to work.

See you at the September meeting!

Ron

THANK YOU

From AVA –

“The incentive Awards Program is fundamental to our organization. The IVV Awards Program Handbook is printed with special thanks to the Walk’n Mass Volkssport Club, Menehune Marchers, Peninsula Pathfinders of Virginia, Placer Pacers, Wandering Wheels Volkssport Club and Treasure Valley Volkssports. These clubs provided the funds for printing this “handbook” of information so that clubs will have something to use at events as a reference... ”

Thanks to all the Pathfinders for their support.   Ron

SPOTLIGHT ON PUBLICITY

Our club has a number of committees, such as sales, publicity, newsletter, webmaster, membership, etc. to help conduct club business.  Over the past few months we have tried to tell you about some of the various committees.   This month’s focus is on the Publicity Committee led by David Hartman. David has been committee chairperson for several years. Duties are listed below.

--Coordinate with local newspapers to include articles about our club, walks and programs.

--Work with the military bases (Langley, Fort Monroe and Fort Eustis) to include articles about our club and walks.

--Talk to people about our club and encouraging them to join us for a walk.

Want to help—let David know.

Thanks, David, for all you do!

Girl Scout Jamboree

The Colonial Coast Girl Scout Council invited the Pathfinders to set up an information booth at their 2006 Jamboree to be held Saturday, September 30, 2006 from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Langley Speedway to talk to the girls on walking; how to walk; and paths to walk in the area.

Art Whittaker has agreed to take the lead for the Pathfinders.  If you can help even it is for only an hour or so or have a question please give art a call at 723-4934 or email him at (email: etmarvinmartian@msn.com)

The link below should take you to the flyer on the event the Girl Scouts are asking us to participate in:

Changes – YREs

Fort Boykins site was down for several days but is now back up and running!

Pasadena, MD start point (Down’s Park) has changed its name from “177 Diner” to “Bogey and Bailey’s Family Restaurant. Location and business hours are still the same, as far as we know.

Leesburg, VA (20176) YRE site has moved from South Street Under Deli to a new location at the Loudon Convention and Visitors Center on Catoctin Circle. This is the new site for the 10/20/30-km walk. Ask at the counter for the walk box. To find the visitor’s center take business route 7 (Market Street) to the light at Catoctin Circle (Johnson.s Steak House is on the left and Chevy Chase Bank on the right at that corner.) Turn left onto Catoctin Circle. The visitors center is on the right in a red brick building just past the used car dealership.

Bob Wright, President, Loudon Walking and Volkssport Club reports that more changes are on the way, include some walks will become separate events and offer 5- or 6-km distances as well as the longer walks.

The Glen Burnie and Kinder Farm Park, MD start/end point has changed its name from XTRAMART to CITGO., 7327 Ritchie Hwy, Glen Burnie (20160). From Rts I-95 & I-295 take MD 100 east. Exit at 13B toward Glen Burnie onto I-97 north. Exit at Rt. 648 (Balto/Annapolis Blvd.) Turn left. Follow for three traffic lights. CITGO will be on the right. Ask clerk for the walk box. Register here and drive a short distance to the start point. PoC: Bill Hassel, 410-437-2164 or wahasse@ix.netcom.com.

Group Walks:

Twelve people walked the Group Walk August 12th at Fort Boykin. Bill Lowell gave a guided tour around the inside of the park. The day was beautiful – not as hot as it had been.

October is National Volkssporting Month

Let’s all celebrate National Volkssporting Month by walking at Yorktown on October 21. A big crowd would be a wonderful way to celebrate. See you there. – Shirley Boyd.
