Out ‘n about 10 km

Three Musketeers
By David Hartman

Saturday, October 15—a lovely Indian summer day—three male Musketeers, Jack Rezabek, Andy Armano and David Hartman did the 12 km Ivor walk. The entire walk is on two-lane country roads. Light traffic. What a contrast in weather compared to the Fort Monroe walk one week earlier. While doing the walk, one walker made up a short poem:

We do not walk slow,
We do not walk fast,
Only walk half ass
.”

The Colorful Coronado, CA, 12 km Volksmarch

By Jack Rezabek

While attending a U.S. Navy reunion in San Diego, I took time out to travel to Coronado, CA. The Coronado Beachcombers 12 km YRE was outstanding and most enjoyable.

Coronado is located at the east end of North Island, across San Diego Bay from the city of San Diego.

This trail has it “all,” including a walk by historic Hotel Del Coronado, a city walk, a beach walk, a walk on the paved path by the ferry landing and Centennial Park, a walk underneath the Coronado Bay Bridge, and even a small hill to climb—and all this on one trail. The city of Coronado is extremely clean. Very little, if any, trash was found scattered along the trail. Even the alleys were clean. No need for “Adopt a Spot” here.

The weather was sunny, mid 70’s, low humidity, and enjoyable sea breeze was blowing.

Almost every city sidewalk was handicapped accessible. I just wish there was more time for me to explore the shops along Orange Avenue

October meeting elections and business meeting

Officers for 2006 – 2007 were elected:

President: Ron Berard

Vice President: Shirley Boyd

Secretary: Barbara Washburn

Treasurer: Cheryl Lauria

In other business, a motion was made and seconded to change the club’s constitution and bylaws. The constitution will be updated to reflect that (1) officers are now elected for a two-year term, (2) the duties of Historian were given to the Secretary, and (3) minor typos in the earlier constitution were corrected.

These changes to the constitution will be voted on at the November meeting.

Change in Mariners Museum YRE

Mariners' Museum is currently undergoing remodeling.  The entrance has moved to the side of the building.  Anyone walking the Mariners' Museum Year Round walk should follow the signs to the admissions desk and ask for the Volksmarch Box. The museum estimates June 2006 before the main entrance is reopened.

Re-registration form. Please send this form and your registration fee in the enclosed envelope.

Fort Monroe Event

As David Hartman said, only mad dogs, Englishmen and Volksmarchers would show up in the monsoon-like weather we had at this event.

In rain gear and carrying umbrellas, 32 walkers showed up!

From the Sales Corner:

Sales were slow during the October walk (weather might have had something to do with it). Sales totaled $40, mostly new walker packets and books.

From the Trip Corner

Have an idea for a bus trip for 2006? A special place or a special walk that you’d like to do but don’t want to drive? Let Diane Berard know.
